4 Forms of Nationalism in French Canada 1867 - 1950
Between 1867 and 1950 different types of nationalism surfaced in Quebec. After Confederation French Canadian nationalism remained survival nationalism. The provincial government was viewed as a political authority capable of defending French Canadian interests. Concerns = French Canadians leaving Canada for the United States. Solution = agriculturalism (return to the land, modernized agriculture, new regions of colonization)

5 Imperialism and Nationalism in the early 20th century

Imperialists = British Business Class Viewed Canada as part of the British Empire so English should be the only official language and Protestantism the only religion. Believed that Canada should participate in the Imperial wars of Great Britain to help Great Britain expand its empire. Henri Bourassa thought that the Canadians should unite to defend Canada’s autonomy with regard to Britain. Opposed Canada’s participation in the Imperial wars (Boer War) Bourassa founded Le Devoir Newspaper to circulate nationalist ideas.

6 French Canadian Nationalism Between 1920 and 1950

7 To promote this idea, Groulx founded the magazine L’ Action nationale.
Lionel Groulx was the main spokesperson of French Canadian Nationalism from to 1950 For Groulx, Quebec was a political space where the French Canadian people were guaranteed survival. To promote this idea, Groulx founded the magazine L’ Action nationale. In 1933, cooperatism was suggested as a solution to the injustice caused by capitalism. Cooperatism = build up the local rural economy with the help of the capitalist system. (colonization) Lionel Groulx
