1
Rebounding from Failure
By Andrew Billings and Susanna Harbach Remember to talk about donuts and tell them who they are representing.
2
Setting the stage Over the past three seasons the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers have finished a combined 47 and 199, including finishing one game above the worst record of all time this past season. You are the players, coaching staff, and management of the 76ers. We have been tasked with helping the team deal with failure.
3
Resources Survey distributed prior to training session. Powerpoint.
Handouts for different writing exercises, timelines, and lists. Susanna
4
Ice breaker Pair up with someone who took the same kind of donut as you. Once paired up, share an experience that involved a failure of some sort. After that, share an instance of a failure that you were either helped by someone to address or helped someone to address. Susanna
5
Needs analysis 10 question survey distributed to the team.
6
Objectives Define and explain the failure.
Analyze what lead to the failure. Explain what could be changed or done differently in the future to avoid failure. Define what could be done now to mitigate damage. Respond to failure with an appropriate attitude.
7
Task analysis - Define and explain the failure
Determine how success is defined in that situation. Provide a timeline of events leading up to the failure becoming evident. Qualify how close to success you were. Identify who determined it was a failure and what standards were used. Susanna
8
Methods - define and explain the failure
In your own words, write down what would have constituted a success for the season and how close you came to it. Again in your own words, write down what you believe to have been the organization’s definition of success for the season and how close you came to it. Susanna
9
Task Analysis - analyze and explain what lead to the failure
Identify what small failures led to the overall failure. List any mistakes that were made repeatedly. Determine why any small failures occurred. Determine which of these factors were within your control. Of the factors that were not within your control, determine which you still attempted to influence and why you did so.
10
Methods - analyze and explain what lead to the failure
Timeline of events leading up to and including the season. Make a chart dividing up factors that you could and could not control.
11
Task analysis - explain what could be changed or done differently in the future to avoid failure
Ascertain whether the individual players and team as a whole are willing to maintain a positive mindset of the team for the future. State what detracted from potential success. Ask why these factors impeded your success. Determine how to address them so that their damage in the future can be mitigated. State what propelled the success that was experienced. Figure out how these factors led to success. Determine what can be done in the future to emphasize these things. Susanna
12
Methods - explain what could be changed or done differently in the future to avoid failure
Prepare a list of successes from the season Design a plan to emphasize the aspects that lead to these successes Susanna
13
Task analysis - define what could be done now to mitigate damage
Determine the immediate poor results stemming from the failure. Analyze the results on an individual basis. Brainstorm ways to combat them. Consider what the consequences may be of each action. Select most beneficial course of action.
14
Methods - define what could be done now to mitigate damage
Prepare a list of criteria for successfully reversing damages. Explain why each option does or does not meet this criteria.
15
Task analysis - respond to failure with the appropriate attitude
Describe your current attitude toward the failure List ways that this current attitude is productive and unproductive (toward overcoming the failure) List the positive benefits of negative experiences or perceived failures. Determine if you are projecting an attitude that properly acknowledges these benefits and explain why. List attainable methods to maintaining an appropriate attitude towards failure. Susanna
16
Methods - respond to failure with the appropriate attitude
Write how you would determine if a response to failure is appropriate or not. List some reasons why you and other people may tend not to respond with an appropriate response. Susanna
17
Post - training assessment
Post-training assessment will be a case study (participants will not be told what to think about the failure in their study, they will simply have to identify failures within and analyze how it was handled). Susanna
