What is the minimum age that you think a child should be allowed to work? Should it be different for different types of jobs? How many hours a day should minors (under 18) be allowed to work?

IMMIGRATION EXPERIENCE LETTER
OBJECTIVE: Describe the experience of immigrants moving to the U.S. and adjusting to their new life. DIRECTIONS: Write a letter as if you were an immigrant who migrated to the United States in the late 1800s. Refer to your lecture notes, and text book (P & ) to write a letter to a family member describing the experience and difficulties faced upon arriving and living in the U.S. Be sure to include each of the topics listed below in your letter. Your letter should be typed (12 pt font, single spaced, creative font is OK). ***DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY 11/12 Be sure to include the following: - Introduction - description of the journey (travel conditions, feelings of hope/excitement) & experience of the Ellis/Angel Island immigration station - new living conditions (ethnic communities, urban problems) - difficulties faced in U.S. (nativism/discrimination, low-wage jobs) - Conclusion

As America entered into the 20th century, middle class reformers addressed many social problems Work conditions, rights for women and children, economic reform, environmental issues and social welfare were a few of these issues

PROTECTING WORKING CHILDREN
As the number of child workers rose, reformers worked to end child labor Children were more prone to accidents caused by fatigue Nearly every state limited or banned child labor by 1918

EFFORTS TO LIMIT HOURS The Supreme Court and the states passed or strengthened laws reducing women’s hours of work Progressives also succeeded in winning worker’s compensation to aid families of injured workers

ELECTION REFORM Citizens fought for, and won, such measures as secret ballots, referendum votes, and the recall Citizens could petition and get initiatives on the ballot In 1899, Minnesota passed the first statewide primary system

DIRECT ELECTION OF SENATORS
Before 1913, each state’s legislature had chosen its own U.S. senators To force senators to be more responsive to the public, progressives pushed for the popular election of senators As a result, Congress passed the th Amendment (1913)
