Leadership Leadership is the process of influencing employees to work toward the achievement of objectives. Leadership is one of the most talked about, researched, and written about management topics. Leadership can make a difference in performance. Effective leadership = better performance!

What does it take to be an effective leader?
For years researchers have been trying to answer this question. While there is no universal agreement about these answers you will have the chance to learn about what has been discussed. and-bad-teamwork

Leadership Trait Theory
In the 1900’s an organized approach to studying leadership began. Early studies were based on the notion that leaders were born not made Researchers want to identify a set of characteristics, or traits, that would distinguish great leaders. Leadership Trait Theory – Assumes that there are distinctive physical and psychological characteristics accounting for leadership effectiveness. This list of traits used for promotions and hiring candidates for leadership positions. Results = Inconclusive. No set list can be created after over 300 such studies.

Current Studies Although it is generally agreed on that there is no universal set of leadership traits, people continue to write and research about them The Big Five personality test is used to create a preferred leadership profile. In a study conducted by the Wall Street Journal/Gallup, 782 top executives in 282 large corporations were asked, “What are the most important traits for success as a supervisor?” Before the results are given…. Behavioral Leadership Theories
By the late 1940’s, most of the leadership research had switched from trait theory to a focus on the leader’s behavior. Behavioral Leadership Theories assume that there are distinctive styles that effective leaders use consistently, that is, the good leadership is rooted in behavior.

Contingency Leadership Theories
In the 1960’s, it became apparent that there is no one best leadership style in all situations. Contingency Leadership Theories assume that the appropriate leadership style varies from situation to situation. This is STILL being used today
