1 inequality Key Words TEACHER TALK Point to the Word 1 image.
One word in the selection is inequality. Say it with me: inequality. Inequality means “not having the same rights or opportunities.” In the story that we will read, Frances Wright was bothered by the inequality that some children had to work instead of going to school. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word inequality. (Point to the billboard.) This is a billboard that represents the inequality of men earning higher wages or salary than women. Have a discussion about women earning less money for doing the same work as men even today. Now let’s say inequality together three more times: inequality, inequality, inequality. inequality This image is licensed under Creative Commons by NC SA

2 poverty Key Words TEACHER TALK Point to the Word 2 image.
Another word in the selection is poverty. Say it with me: poverty. Poverty means “being extremely poor.” “In her speeches and articles Wright argued that the rich should help the poor, that women should have more rights, and that free education for all would help to raise people out of poverty.” Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word poverty. (Point to the boy with the sign.) This boy is upset and sad because he doesn’t have any money to pay for things he needs. This boy looks like his clothing is torn and worn and he does not look happy either. He is poor and being unable to afford clothing is showing poverty. Now let’s say poverty together three more times: poverty, poverty, poverty. poverty

3 society Key Words TEACHER TALK Point to the Word 3 image.
Another word in the selection is society. Say it with me: society. Society is all the communities that make up a country or place. “Wright spent a lot of time reading books about society.” “Even as a young woman, Frances Wright was aware of the inequality in the world and wanted to change society.” Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word society. (Point to the United States.) This picture shows that the United States is a society filled with many different kinds of people. Each community within the United States makes up a society. Now let’s say society together three more times: society, society, society. society Image taken from

4 inspired Key Words TEACHER TALK Point to the Word 4 image.
Another word in the selection is inspired. Say it with me: inspired. Inspired is causing someone to do something good. People are inspired when they are doing something they feel strongly about. “Frances Wright was inspired by slavery and wanted to do something to end it.” “Frances Wright also inspired many people because she fought for women’s rights.” Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word inspired. (Point to the fish.) This fish is inspired. The fish wants to be in the bigger fish bowl. It feels so strongly about being in a bigger space that it takes action to do so. Now let’s say inspired together three more times: inspired, inspired, inspired. inspired

5 community Key Words TEACHER TALK Point to the Word 5 image.
Another word in the selection is community. Say it with me: community. A community is a group of people living in the same place. “Wright wanted to start a community where enslaved people could earn their freedom and learn to read.” Also, you all are a part of the Howard County School Community. Communities are smaller groups within a society. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word community. (Point to the people in the photo.) These people are a part of this community because they live within a similar area. There are homes, shops, buildings, and could consist of a city or county. Now let’s say community together three more times: community, community, community. community

6 slavery Key Words TEACHER TALK Point to the Word 6 image.
Another word in the selection is slavery. Say it with me: slavery. Slavery is making people work for no pay. “Once in the United States, Wright became worried about slavery because enslaved people had no rights.” Slaves worked in unfair environments with harsh conditions. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word slavery. Africans were loaded onto a boat for passage to the United States where they would have to work for no pay. These people were forcefully taken and made to work in unfair situations. Now let’s say slavery together three more times: slavery, slavery, slavery. slavery
