Complex Sentences Complex Sentence: one or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses

Adverb Clause Adverb Clause: a dependent clause that takes the place of an adverb in a sentence can be removed from the sentence and the sentence will still makes sense it will contain a subject and verb but is not a complete thought functions as an adverb and answers when, where, why, or how can usually be moved around in a sentence begins with a subordinating conjunction

Punctuating an Adverb Clause
When the adverb clause begins the sentence, always set it off with a comma when the adverb clause ends the sentence, eliminate the comma

use two layers or tiers of diagram always begin with the independent clause the adverb clause is diagrammed underneath the independent clause join the verbs with a dotted line write the subordinating conjunction on the dotted line
