1 Irony figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words.

3 Situational Irony Occurs when a character’s actions have an effect that is opposite from what is intended

4 The Wizard of Oz Dorothy goes to the wizard to find a way home, in the end she learns she has always had the power to return home. Scarecrow wishes for a brain and then realizes he’s been the brains of the group all along. Tin Man wishes for a heart, but realizes that losing Dorothy will break his heart. The cowardly lion realizes that he is in fact the bravest of them all, when it comes to defeating the wicked witch.

5 What’s its purpose? It creates an unexpected turn at the end of a story and makes an audience laugh or cry. 

6 Dramatic irony When the audience knows something the characters do not know. Ted thinks that the police have arrested him for picking up hitchhiker. The audience knows that the police are interrogating him about a murder. When Ted responds to the police: “I’ve done it several times before -- it’s no big deal.”

7 In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo thinks Juliet is dead and the audience knows she is not.
In a scary movie, the character walks into a house and the audience knows the killer is in the house.

8 Verbal Irony a person says or writes one thing and means another.

9 For example When in response to a foolish idea, we say, “what a great idea!” it is a verbal irony.
