1
Population Growth & Measurement
Mr. Anderson
2
Population All the members of one species that live in the same area.
Important Information about Populations - Population Size - Population Growth - Population Density
3
Population Size Ways of measuring Population Size Direct Observation
Indirect Observation Sampling Mark-and-Recapture
4
Direct Observation Simply counting the organisms of a population.
Small Populations Small Areas Exact count
5
Indirect Observation Using signs of an organism to estimate the population. Used for hard to capture animals. Exact count.
6
Sampling Counting the number of organisms in a small area, to estimate how many are in a larger area. Large Populations Large Areas Estimation
7
Mark and Recapture Animals are safely captured, marked, and then later recaptured. Best with easy to capture animals. Estimation
8
Birth Rate vs. Death Rate
Birth Rate- the number of births in a population in a certain amount of time. 21 births per year Death Rate- the number of deaths in a population in a certain amount of time. 37 deaths per year
9
Birth Rate > Death Rate = Population Increase
10
Death Rate > Birth Rate = Population Decrease
11
Population Density The number of organisms in an area of specific size.
