Why Hans is the most courageous
He shows the theme of courage by showing his selflessness, grit, and the risks that he takes to protect the ones he loves. These actions are displayed throughout the novel many times. These next slides will explain why Han Huberman is the most courageous character in the novel.

Grit How you may ask does Hans, a poor man who paints houses is the most courageous person in the novel. Hans’s courage is shown through the book especially when hes greeted by a young Jewish man Max Vandenburg. Hans had kindly taken in Max under his care by keeping him in his basement. Being seen with a Jew in those times could have resulted in persecution of your whole family. He could have lost everything he’s worked for, including the newest member of their family.
4
Selflessness With careful analysis, you can see Hans is very selfless when it comes to protecting his loved ones. Hans displayed act of selflessness when he and Rosa adopted Liesel, knowing that they can’t even afford basic necessities for themselves but still find a way to provide for her. Hans had also shown selflessness when he gave bread to the Jew that was marching in the walk of shame. Hans knew that if the soldiers found out that he had been giving bread his family would be killed, however, he still chose to stand up for his beliefs. He chose to help the Jews at his own risk. That is why I think Hans Hubberman shows the act of selflessness better than any other character.

Risk Hans had served in the military for many years, after doing his time he had retired and became a painter. During the time where people hated the Jews, they would hatful comments on their houses. Hans would paint over the nasty slurs people would write on Jewish houses which gave him a bad reputation amongst the Jew hating population. This would hurt his business and family financials. By doing this he had risked his family's safety for doing what's right
