Be able to analyze the 5 motives for imperialism through the use of primary source materials: Economic Political Religious Exploratory Ideological Agenda: Bellringer Recap/Review of Imperialism motive activity from yesterday Create visual representation for motives Imperialism artifact analysis with partner

3 Visual Representation of Motives
With your partner, decide on a simple visual representation for each of the 5 motives and draw your symbol in the box next to each motive. (each image will be displayed on screen for 3 minutes) I will read passages to the class.

4 Imperialism Motives Economic Religious Political Exploratory
Make money, expand/control foreign trade, create new markets to sell goods, access raw materials, seek cheap labor Religious Spread Christianity, spread European values/morals, educate native populations Political Exploratory Gain power/prestige, expand territory, compete with rivals, boost national pride Explore the “unknown,” conduct scientific research, investigate other cultures Ideological Cultural superiority of Europeans, civilize primitive peoples, Social Darwinism (racism)

5 Imperialism Artifact Analysis
With your Group Analyze the artifact Write a detailed description of the artifact Draw the symbol(s) for the motive(s) the artifact illustrates Can be more than just one! Provide justification for how the artifact illustrates motive(s). Make sure you can discuss this when we go over them!
