LL Check each time you start a new paragraph. Have you moved on to a different topic/idea? Find each time the words “nice”, “bad” or “good” are used. Replace them with better words Strategies Strategies Ask someone you respect to let you see their draft. What are the biggest differences in content and/or appearance between their draft and yours? Read your work out loud, OR ask someone to read it to you. What do you notice? Do you need to revise anything? Strategies Strategies Reread the directions and/or rubric. Which essay requirement is the LEAST well done? How can you fix that? What resources do you have available to help you make this better? Choose at least ONE and use it. Strategies Strategies

4 Check the font, size, indenting, and spacing.
Formatting Formatting Check the font, size, indenting, and spacing. Are they MLA compliant? Does your writing have a title? Is it centered? Does it grab the reader? Does it match the focus of what the writing is about? Formatting Formatting Is your heading where it should be? Does it have the necessary information? Did you put your last name and page number in the upper right hand corner? Formatting Formatting Are quotes longer than four lines formatted correctly? Are quotes embedded into the text? Do you have a works cited page? Is it formatted as expected? Are citations in alphabetical order? Hanging indents? Double spaced?

5 Editing Editing Editing Editing Editing Editing
Be your own spell check. Read over the draft, looking ONLY for spelling. Circle anything that even COULD be wrong. Use CTRL+F to search for every comma. Does it create a run-on? Is it needed in that spot? Editing Editing Search for every FANBOYS word (coordinate conjunction). Is it creating a run-on sentence, or is it a needed part of a compound subject/ predicate? Find every adverb (usually ending in –ly). Is it necessary, or would a stronger verb eliminate the need for it? . Editing Editing Can this sentence REALLY stand on its own, or is it a fragment? Check all of them! Do you need to convert any sentences from passive to active voice? Can you use better active verbs? .

6 Editing Editing Editing Editing Editing Editing
Look at all your verbs. Have you used present tense? Is the essay written in third person Editing Editing Look for semicolons. Are they used correctly? Find sentences that list things. Have you used parallel structure? . Editing Editing Check for apostrophes. Are they used to show possession? If not, get rid of them. Find your in-text citations. Are they enclosed within the sentence?

7 Feedback Feedback Feedback Feedback Feedback Feedback
Read your partner’s writing and tell them what the best thing about it is. Read your partner’s writing and tell them what the ONE, biggest thing is that’s keeping them from a level 4.
