Aim: What effect does the first person perspective give the reader? Do Now: What does it mean to “tell tales”? HW: Handout: Reread and annotate the story through Paragraph 6 and answer study guide questions 1-9.

2 Reread and annotate the first two paragraphs. Look for:
LISTEN! Reread and annotate the first two paragraphs. Look for: Anything that indicates sanity or insanity in the narrator. Anything else that seems important.

3 In pairs: what is he explicitly saying, and what do his words imply.
Look at the first two paragraphs. The narrator says many things without intending to. In pairs: what is he explicitly saying, and what do his words imply. What does explicitly mean in this context? fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated What does imply mean in this context? strongly suggest the truth or existence of (something not expressly stated)

4 Explicitly Stated Implied “Why will you say that I am mad?” lns 1-2 The narrator believes that whomever he is speaking to has called him crazy.

5 How does the story being in first person contribute to our understanding of the narrator?
