The animal kingdom is divided into 35 major groups called Phyla
Animalia Kingdom The animal kingdom is divided into 35 major groups called Phyla
2
Structure of animals All animals are made up of cells. Cell:
Basic structure for living things.
3
The cells of most animals are organized into higher levels of structure.
A group of similar cells that perform a specific function is called a tissue. Fruit veggy lab, specialized tissue makes us more efficient (complex)
4
Tissues combine to form organs.
Specialized tissue and organs make us more efficient.
5
Organs combine to make up a system
What other systems do you know? Body? Car? School? Lunch?
6

7
Vocabulary Adaptation-
a characteristic that allows an organism to better survive in its environment. What adaptations do you make in your life?
8
Functions of animals Obtaining food (including water) and oxygen
What adaptations do some animals have to get food and oxygen? Why do we need oxygen?
9
2. Keeping internal conditions stable
2. Keeping internal conditions stable. Homeostasis What adaptations do organisms have to maintain internal conditions?
10
3. Movement Why do animals move
3. Movement Why do animals move? to get food to avoid predators to find a mate
11
4. Reproduction Asexual -produces offspring that are identical to the parent Sexual -produces unique offspring Why is sexual reproduction helpful?
12
Classification Animal kingdom (150,000,000 species) is divided into 2 groups vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates- animals with a backbone. Invertebrates- animals without a backbone (97%).

What does this diagram represent
What does this diagram represent? Which is more closely related a fish and frog or fish and starfish?
22
Symmetry A balanced arrangement of parts Why symmetry, just pretty?
23
Two types of symmetry Bilateral symmetry- one line that divides an object into halves that are mirror images. Radial symmetry- objects that have many lines of symmetry going through a central point. What objects in your life are symmetrical? What type of symmetry?
25
Symmetry tells us something about the animals
Animals without symmetry tend to have simple body plans, they are less developed Animals that exhibit symmetry tend to be more complex.
26
Almost all animals have symmetry
Almost all animals have symmetry. What type of symmetry does this animal display? One of the exceptions is the sponge What can we infer about the complexity of a sponge? Least complex animal
27
What type of symmetry?
28
Animals with radial symmetry
Live in the water. Are slow. Do not have distinct fronts or backs.
29
What type of symmetry?
30
Animals with bilateral symmetry
Larger and more complex then animals with radial symmetry. Faster – bilateral symmetry leads to a more streamline body. Have a distinct front where their sense organs are located.
