Aim: How does the author’s tone change the reader’s experience?
Do Now: What do we mean by tone? HW: Read Stage 2 and answer the study guide questions.

tone An attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject. Can also be used to describe words said by characters/first person narrators. (Think of it as the author’s tone of voice.)

MOOD the atmosphere of a literary piece, as it creates an emotional situation that surrounds the readers. What is the difference between tone and mood? Tone indicates the author’s feelings or point of view about a topic. Mood is what we, as readers, are supposed to feel during a scene.

What sort of words would we use to describe tone?
Words that involve emotion – angry, afraid, tense, happy, loving, excited, etc.
