This included placing individuals on the scaffold or stocks, forcing them to wear letters representing their crime, and other punishments. The purpose was to deter others committing crimes. If you saw someone humiliated for committing an action, then you would be less likely to commit the action yourself. Is public humiliation an acceptable form of punishment?
