What was one of the three big reason why the colonies began considering a union in the 1860s? Well, Confederation didn’t do much to stop the Americans from threatening to take over large chunks of North America

4 Rupert’s Land Was controlled by the Hudson Bay Company
The Government in Ottawa was worried the Americans wanted to control it, so they tried to buy the land from the HBC On 19 November 1869, the Hudson's Bay Company sold Rupert's Land, following the passing of the Rupert's Land Act of 1868, to the newly formed Canadian Government for £300,000.
