Physical and Chemical Properties
2
Physical Properties Physical Properties are properties that you can observe or measure. Examples: Color Odor Density Melting and boiling point Mass
3
Two types of physical properties
Intensive Physical Properties Properties that do NOT change with the amount of substance present Independent of the amount of matter Examples: Color Melting/boiling point Texture Density
4
Extensive physical properties
Properties that depend on the amount of matter present Examples: Mass Volume Length
5
Chemical Properties How a substance reacts with another substance.
Examples: Flammability Reactivity with acids Ability to rust
6
Physical and chemical changes
Physical Change Change in appearance Same substance after the change Examples: Ice melting Water boiling Tearing paper Salt dissolving in water
7
Chemical change Forms a new substance with new properties Examples:
Metal rusting Burning wood Explosion Baking a cake
8
Evidence of a chemical change
Bubbling or smoke given off (gas)
9
Evidence of a chemical change
Heat or light given off
10
Evidence of a chemical change
Color change
11
Evidence of a chemical change
Formation of a precipitate (solid)
