In the north Kashub lived a benevolent and sympathetic man
In the north Kashub lived a benevolent and sympathetic man. He enjoyed a good reputation among his neighbors, never refused to help everyone. He took care of his wife and children The devil was very disturbed by the peasants' godliness. He used various tricks to bring him down the wrong road, but the man did not succumb to this evil temptation. After giving it a lot of thinking the devil came up with the idea of how to get the soul of a good peasant! He intended to plant tobacco: a plant that was unknown in Kashubia. This way he wanted to make the peasant lie, knowing that he would not know the name of the plant. So he did.

When the tobacco grew high, a good peasant passed near the field it was planted on. The devil asked the passer by what was the name of the herb that grew there. The man felt awkward and didn't want to admit that he did not know the plant, so he said he did not remember, but was going to ask his wife, come back tomorrow and name it. The devil agreed to this arrangement, provided that if the man did not know the name of the plant the next day, he would give his soul to the devil. When Kashub returned home, he shared a problem with his wife. He did not know what to do. After a moment's reflection, the peasant's wife greased herself with fat, covered herself with feathers and went to the place where the mysterious plant grew. Arriving at the place, she started to roll over. When the devil saw it, he almost jumped out of his skin! He shouted to leave his tobacco alone!

In this way, the peasant learned what the diabolic plant was called
In this way, the peasant learned what the diabolic plant was called. The tobacco soon dried up and crumbled. When the peasant smelled the aromatic powder, he accidentally took a little sniff to his nose and began to sneeze. He liked it so much that he picked up the dry tobacco and this way the Kashubians started using snuff. The habit of using it quickly spread to all Kashubia and survived to this day.
