John Hersey Hiroshima began what some critics call the genre of the “nonfiction novel.” Hiroshima has been called the most significant piece of reportage in modern times. In 1942 as a war reporter, Hersey was cited for bravery by the Secretary of the Navy for carrying wounded men from the battlefield while under fire.

Literary Terms (P. 926) Subjective Reporting – a writer openly expresses personal emotions and attitudes toward the events and characters he or she is writing about. Objective Reporting – A writer’s emotions are kept at a distance, and he or she focuses on observable, verifiable facts

As you read, on your paper identify the six people whose experiences Hersey follows. 1-6. Answer the following questions about each person: A. Name B. Occupation C. Activity before the bomb hits D. Experience when the bomb hits E. Experience after the bomb hits What do all of the accounts have in common? To what do all the survivors owe their lives? Does the author’s objective presentation of the facts enrich or take from the survivors’ stories? Explain your answer.

Activity Working in your group, create a fictional leader who is abusing his/her power. Write an essay persuading the United States to take action. Your leader may be based on a real-life person. Make sure you identify your leader by name, tell in detail the offenses the leader has committed, and issue a call to action.
