3.4 Perpendicular Lines
2
Definitions: Perpendicular Bisector- a line intersecting a segment at its midpoint forming right angles. Distance from a point to a line- the length of the perpendicular segment from the point to the line.
3
Examples: 1) Name the shortest segment from point A to BC. 2) Write and solve an inequality for x.
4
Perpendicular Lines: If 2 lines intersect forming a linear pair of congruent angles, the lines are perpendicular. Draw pictures describing each Theorem.
5
Perpendicular Lines: If a transversal is perpendicular to one of two parallel lines, it is perpendicular to the other. Draw pictures describing each Theorem.
6
Perpendicular Lines: If two lines are perpendicular to the same line, the two lines are parallel. Draw pictures describing each Theorem.
7
Example: A carpenter’s square forms a right
angle. A carpenter places the square so that one side is parallel to an edge of a board, and then draws a line along the other side of the square. Then he slides the square to the right and draws a Second line. Why must the two lines be parallel?
