3 EFFECTIVE LISTENING Nonverbal Behaviors
Give your full attention to the person speaking. Keep your mind from wandering. Stand or sit in a relaxed way. Look at the person. Listen for the message. Let the speaker finish before you talk.

4 EFFECTIVE LISTENING Verbal Behaviors
Summarize in your own words what you hear the person say. Ask questions to express interest and to help you understand. Make comments on what the person says.

5 RESPONDING TO THE EMOTIONS OF OTHERS
Nonverbal Behaviors Be sure you are calm. Look for clues that tell you what the person is feeling. What is happening The nonverbal cues of the person Listen carefully. Walk away if the person seems dangerous.

6 RESPONDING TO THE EMOTIONS OF OTHERS
Verbal Behaviors Use “I statements.” Try this: “I thought you looked upset when you walked into class and I wondered if something was wrong.” Avoid this: “You sure are sad. What happened?” Name the emotions being described by the person. Try this: “Sounds pretty frustrating.” Ask clarifying questions. Try this: “What did you mean when you said…”

Person B = Speaker Person C = Observer Round 2 Person A = Observer Person B = Listener Person C = Speaker Round 3 Person A = Speaker Person B = Observer Person C = Listener Speakers have two minutes to talk. Observers have one minute to give feedback to listeners.
