1 Nervous Tissue

2 Nervous Tissue Nervous tissue is the main component of the nervous system—the brain, spinal cord, and nerves—which regulates and controls body functions. It contains two major cell types: Neurons - For processing, transfer, and storage of information Neuroglia – For support, regulation & protection of neurons

3 Nervous Tissue Major cell types
Neurons are highly specialized nerve cells that generate and conduct nerve impulses. Their processes allow them to respond to stimuli (a role of dendrites) and to transmit electrical impulses over substantial distances within the body (the job of axons, which may be very long and myelinated, that is, covered with a fatty sheath that increases the speed of nerve transmission).

4 Neuron structure

5 Neuroglia Clear debris and damaged structures in CNS,
which are the phagocytes of the CNS provide structural and metabolic support for neurons lining brain cavities and central canal in spinal cord. Produce the myelin sheath in CNS Produce the myelin sheath in the PNS – Aid in cleaning up the PNS debris – Guide the regrowth of PNS axons. Provide a controlled microenvironment around the neuron.
