Physical Science Force
Chapter 1 Notes Physical Science Force
2
Two Types of Science Real (or Pure)
Gathering of new information or the discovery of a new fact Examples How the eye works Applied (or Technology) Practical use of scientific information Examples Glasses and contacts
3
Experiments Experiment Hypothesis
Defn: an organized procedure for testing a hypothesis Hypothesis An educated guess Guess with background knowledge A testable prediction
4
Hypothesis If I change __________________, then ________________ will change, because of ______________________. Ex: If I go out to the bus 20 minutes later at 7:30, then I will not catch the bus, because the bus comes at 7:15.
5
Parts of an Experiment Control Constant Variable
Defn: a standard for comparison Constant Defn: a factor that doesn’t vary in an experiment Variable Defn: something that can change in an experiment
6
Two Types of Variables Independent Variable Dependent Variable
Defn: the factor changed or adjusted by the experimenter Dependent Variable Defn: the factor that changes due to the change in the independent variable
7
More Hypothesis If I change , then . will change, because of
(independent variable) (dependent variable) (background information, educated portion)
8
Inferences and Observations
Something that you can gather using your 5 senses (sight, touch, hearing, smell, taste) Inferences Something you can guess based on observations
9
Your task: Assignment book pages 2 – 5
(chapter 1 reinforcement) This corresponds with Chapter 1 in the textbook (pages 6 – 17)
