1 the Epic Hero and the Epic Heroic Cycle

2 the Epic Hero What does it take to become an epic hero? He is a man who seems able to conquer most problems that he encounters. He does not have any “super” powers. He is faithful to his family, his country, his god(s). He is brave. He often feels fear but he overcomes his fear due to his responsibilities. He defeats evil. He allows goodness to win. He is intelligent. He must rely on his brainpower to get him out of difficult situations. Sometimes, a higher force (like a god or goddess) will help guide him – will help him to do things for himself.

3 the Epic Heroic Cycle It has a main character who is the epic hero.
What is the epic heroic cycle? It has a main character who is the epic hero. The hero has to go on an important quest. The hero is tested – often to prove his worthiness and his quest. Many mythical beings, as well as humans, are present to help the hero. The hero’s quest takes him to a supernatural world – often one that normal beings are barred from entering. The cycle reaches a low point where the hero nearly gives up on his quest or seems to be defeated. Then, he is “resurrected”. At the end of the cycle there is restitution. Often, the hero regains his rightful place on the throne.
