2 Statement – Voice your opinion
4 points total 1 point: Stated as fact, not opinion 1 point: Provided an answer to the prompt 1 point: Restated or used words from the prompt 1 point: Provided direction for the following argument

3 Proof – Defer to a higher power
4 points total 1 point: Direct quote, paraphrase, or arguable opinion/stance 1 point: Proper citation (in text or parenthetical) 2 points: Supports the statement

4 Explanation – Tell me YOUR thoughts
4 points total 2 points: Detailed and specific examples 2 points: Supports the statement AND proof

5 Synthesis – Wrap it Up Neatly
4 points 1 point: Stated as fact, not an opinion 1 point: Reworded or used words from the statement 1 point: Stays true to the direction of the statement, proof, and explanation 1 point: Firmly concludes the paragraph at hand

6 Grammar/Spelling – I am NOT your editor
4 points I will mark every grammar or spelling mistake that I see with an X Every three marks will result in a loss of one point You can get these points back! Determine what the mistakes are and how to fix them. Rewrite the SPES to incorporate the corrections Turn it in to Ms. Yates for re-proofing

7 Write a SPES Outline (with a partner from your table)
Apply “The Danger of a Single Story” to the Nacirema article. Discuss: Why is a single story dangerous to the way we view culture? Write: Whose (the author, the reader, neither or both) responsibility is it to reduce cultural bias in a written text?
