1 Do Now Please take 2 minutes to answer these questions: Agenda
Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Do Now Please take 2 minutes to answer these questions: What are crackers made of? How does our body use the nutrients of crackers?

2 Objectives By the end of today’s class you will be able to:
Agenda Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Objectives By the end of today’s class you will be able to: Explore the beginning of digestion by eating some food and answering some questions

3 Let’s eat! How many hours have passed since you last ate?
Agenda Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Let’s eat! How many hours have passed since you last ate? List three areas where you feel your salivary glands. Describe how your stomach is behaving. What stimuli are making your salivary glands secrete saliva?

4 Agenda Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Digestion How many times do you chew before swallowing? How did you determine this answer? Describe in what order you use each type of tooth (for example, where does the food move while you are chewing?) Try chewing without using your tongue. Describe your experience.

5 What occurs when you swallow? Order the steps.
Agenda Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Try swallowing while sticking your tongue out. Describe your experience. What occurs when you swallow? Order the steps. Where do you think the food will go now? Without looking in your notes, trace the pathway and provide what you believe are the functions of each step in the pathway.

6 Agenda Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Pair up!~ With a partner develop five questions you could investigate regarding aspects of digestion simply by eating.

7 Anatomy of the Digestive Tract
Agenda Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Anatomy of the Digestive Tract GI Tract Mouth Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine (SI) Large Intestine (colon) Digestion- process by which food is broken down into absorbable units by mechanical (chewing) and chemical means (enzymes) GI tract- flexible muscular tube that goes from mouth, through esophagus, stomach, SI, lg Intestine, and rectum to anus.

8 Anatomy of the tract Agenda
Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Anatomy of the tract The mouth is the beginning of the digestive system. Digestion in the mouth involves mastication (chewing), the stimulation of taste buds, and swallowing. The epiglottis closes to prevent food from entering the pharynx. After swallowing the food is called a bolus. The esophagus is the tube that leads the bolus to the stomach. There is a sphincter at the upper and lower (also known as the cardiac sphincter) ends of the esophagus.

9 Anatomy of the tract 2 Agenda
Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Anatomy of the tract 2 The stomach adds juices and grinds the bolus to a semiliquid mass called chyme. The pyloric sphincter regulates the flow of partially digested food into the small intestine.

10 Anatomy of the tract 3 Agenda
Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Anatomy of the tract 3 The small intestine receives digestive juices from the gallbladder and the pancreas. The three segments of the small intestine are the duodenum, the jejunum and the ileum. The large intestine (colon) begins at the ileocecal valve and ends at the rectum and anus. The chyme passes by the opening of the appendix

11 Closing/Homework Can you do this now?
Agenda Do Now Objectives Digestion intro Anatomy Closing Closing/Homework Can you do this now? Create an overview of the material we will be covering in the next few weeks. Explore the purpose of digestion. Map out the most important anatomical components of digestion.
