1 Do Now: Pick up the paper from the front table and complete the Bellringer portion at the top.

2 What you need to know about Kingdom Plantae:
In addition to these key characteristics, the EOCT will also focus on plant hormones and tropisms. We will explore these two things today!

3 What is a tropism? Tropisms are directional movement responses that occur in response to a directional stimulus.

4 There are 3 main types of tropisms:
Gravitropism Phototropism Thigmotropism

5 Watch the videos and then define gravitropism & determine why it’s important to plants

6 Watch the videos and then define phototropism & determine why it’s important to plants

7 There is one main plant hormone responsible for phototropism:
A hormone is any chemical produced in one part of the body that has a target elsewhere in the body. Auxin is a plant hormone produced in the stem tip that promotes cell elongation. Auxin moves to the darker side of the plant, causing the cells there to grow larger than corresponding cells on the lighter side of the plant.

8 Watch the videos and then define thigmotropism

9 So Ms. Brannen- what about Venus fly traps and sensitive plants?
What kind of tropism(s) do they display

10 … actually display nastic movements (not tropisms)
Nastic movements are plant movements that occur in response to environmental stimuli but unlike tropic movements, the direction of the response is not dependent on the direction of the stimulus.

11 Venus fly trap & sensitive plants…

12 Animal behavior
