1 Today is Monday, May 20th, 2013 Homework:
-Read Chapter 17, Lessons 1 and 2 tonight Warm Up: With your shoulder partners, discuss the following: What are two ways the Earth moves?

2 Goal for Today SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of the Earth as a planet in space and the effects of the tilt of the Earth as it revolves and rotates by modeling it and drawing conclusions about the changes of seasons, length of day and energy availability as it does so.

3 Only write the BLUE text in this PowerPoint
Date: Monday, May 20th, 2013 Title: Earth and the Solar System REMEMBER: You are almost in 6th Grade….DON’T WRITE EVERY SINGLE WORD!!!!!! SUMMARIZE THE NOTES INTO A SHORT-HAND WAY THAT YOU UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!

4 Solar system – made up of the Sun and its 8 planets along with many dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Pluto reclassified in 2008 because of more and more Kuiper Belt objects being recognized. Sun, Inner Planets, Asteroid Belt, Outer Planets, Kuiper Belt, Oort Cloud

8 Earth Made of rock ¾ of surface covered with water and ice
Relatively thin layer of air around it (not as thick as Venus, not as thin as Mars) Has one (1) moon (Moon)

9 Today is Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 Homework:
Read Chapter 17, Lessons 3 and 4 Warm Up: Complete POP Quiz (to make sure you read for homework last night!) PLEASE DO NOT TALK!!!!!!!!

10 Earth moves in a few different ways…
Rotation – one whole spin of an object on its axis Earth’s axis (imaginary center line) Rotation results in: Day and night Comfortable temperature – spins at right speed to prevent Earth from overheating or becoming too cold Tilted on its axis 23.50 Tilt

11 Revolution – the orbital path a celestial body takes around another object (Earth around the Sun, Moon around the Earth) Earth around the Sun – 365 days Moon around the Earth – 28 days Earth around Sun = results in seasons for areas away from the Equator

12 What do….. …..our dear friends have to say about our lovely home planet?

13 Arctic and Antarctic Circles
Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn Equator Prime Meridian Draw a picture directly into your Science Notebook of the next slide you see, labeling the above blue items on it!!!!!!!

17 Orbit is eliptical

20 Closing it up…. What is beyond Neptune in our Solar System?
The Kuiper Belt (pronounced “K-eye-per Belt”) How much is Earth tilted on its axis? 23.50 What causes seasons on Earth? The tilt of Earth’s Axis
