Types of Reactions and Predicting Products
Pre-AP Chemistry
2
Types of Reactions Reactions can be divided into 5 main types:
Synthesis/Combination Decomposition Single Displacement/Replacement Double Displacement/Replacement Combustion
3
Synthesis Synthesis: 2 or more reactants combine to form 1 product Mg + O2 -> MgO
4
Decomposition Decomposition: 1 reactant breaks down into 2 or more products (these would need to be balanced) H2O H2 + O2 KClO3 KCl + O2
5
Single Displacement Single Displacement: a single element replaces another in a compound MgBr2 + Cl2 MgCl2 + Br2 Fe + CuSO4 Cu + FeSO4
6
Double Displacement Double Displacement: parts of two compounds switch places NaOH + FeCl3 Fe(OH)3 + NaCl
7
Combustion And remember that there also exist combustion reactions: the combustion of hydrocarbons like methane ALWAYS produce carbon dioxide and water CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O
