Today’s Meeting Agenda
Define literacy—what is literacy to you? Think about it, write it out, find a partner, and share what you wrote. Discussion and unveiling of VBCPS definition of literacy. Brainstorming strategies in use with three domains of literacy. Discuss findings. POWER paragraph. Diane will introduce the agenda for the day—lots to do; let’s get started.

What does literacy mean to you?
Define literacy—what is literacy to you? Write your thoughts on a sticky—one thought per sheet. Find a partner, and share what you wrote. Try to see if you shared any of the same thoughts and group your sticky notes together by shared thoughts. Diane—we want to start by finding our what literacy means to you. Brainstorm alone, then with your group and see if you can categorize your ideas. Share.

VBCPS Definition of Literacy
Literacy is the continuous process of accessing, comprehending, constructing, conveying and transferring knowledge and ideas through purposeful reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Jennifer—the city created this definition of literacy—note the ongoing nature of the definition. It doesn’t end through mastery of a particular standard; instead, it continues to grow with the student.

Communicating to Learn
LMS Vision of Literacy Literacy at LMS should have a three-pronged approach. One of our goals as a team would be to inform those approaches by incorporating best practices in all content areas. Reading to Learn Writing to Learn Communicating to Learn Diane--`Our vision for this committee is to incorporate best practices in literacy through these 3 domains. These came directly from the city definition. The best practices that we generate will inform our ongoing work with literacy.

What strategies are already being used in your discipline? Reading to Learn 1. 2. Writing to Learn Communicating to Learn Jennifer—we know you are already doing some great things in your classes. Use the 2nd poster on your table to generate strategies already being used in your content area in each of these three domains. Write your thoughts on sticky notes and categorize them as you see fit. Discuss with your table mates. Share out.

Homework Go back to your PLC and find out what literacy strategies are being used in your department. Share them on our Edmodo site. Landstown Literacy Team Edmodo Code: cs7pej Jennifer—we do have some homework—really just an extension of the activity we just finished. Please go back to your PLC and find out what strategies are currently being used in each domain. It’s ok if you don’t find much. Please share your findings on Edmodo.
