Back in the day 2000 years ago a Greek explore name Pytheas discovered that the moon phases and tides were related but couldn’t explain it 1687 Sir Isaac Newton Came up with his theories of gravitational pull 5/12/2019 Template copyright

High Tide and Low Tide High tides are dependent on the rotation of the moon Moon pulls the strongest on the area of the earth that is directly facing the moon If it happens over an ocean water will bulge towards the moon at the same time the other side of the earth water bulges due to the motion of the earth 5/12/2019 Template copyright

Low tides During high tides the water bulges towards the moon Therefore water must be coming from somewhere Water is drawn away from the areas that are not directly facing the moon causing low tides in that area 5/12/2019 Template copyright

Timing the tides If the earth was rotating at the same time as the moon High tide would happen at the same time every day Unfortunately that does not happen Earth for one rotation 24 hours Moon 24 hours and 50 minutes 5/12/2019 Template copyright

Tides can also be affected by the sun
Though the affect is not felt as much, why? Sun is larger but further away There are two tides due to the sun Spring tides When the sun, Earth, and Moon all align Neap Tides When the sun, Earth and Moon form a 90 degree angle 5/12/2019 Template copyright

Tides hectic plans Some coastal areas with narrow inlets can feel the affects of tides greatly These are called tidal bore Where a body of water rushes up a narrow water way during high tide Can cause waves Salt water rushes into fresh waters During Low tides Tidal pools are created Pools of water that is separated by a land mass 5/12/2019 Template copyright
