2 Early Life Christopher Columbus, the son of a wool merchant, was born in Genoa in about When he was still a teenager, he got a job on a merchant ship. He remained at sea until 1470, when French privateers attacked his ship as it sailed north along the Portuguese coast. The boat sank, but the young Columbus floated to shore on a scrap of wood and made his way to Lisbon, where he studied mathematics, astronomy, cartography and navigation. He also began to hatch the plan that would change the world forever.

3 Education Since Christopher Columbus was born in the port city of Genoa, it is not surprising that he became a navigator. Although he was largely self-taught through reading, he attended Prince Henry's School of Navigation in Portugal.

4 Financially Before When Columbus was a teenager, he supported himself financially by working on a merchant ship. He remained at sea until He did other expeditions to support himself as well.

5 Finding the Americas Christopher Columbus’ was inspired to make the voyages to the Americas by his brother, Bartholomew. Bartholomew was a map maker. Christopher took four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean and to Central America and South America, along with the islands of the Caribbean. The Catholic King and Queen of Spain funded the voyages to establish trade routes to Asia. The first voyage that was lead by Columbus began on August 3, 1492 and ended in After landing in the Bahamas, he found Dominica, Trinidad, South America, Martinique, and Central America.

6 After the Discovery of the Americas
After the discovery of the Americas, there was controversy over the value of Columbus’ discoveries. Many researchers, along with other people blame Christopher Columbus for establishing the idea that Native Americans were barbaric and they believe that Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas. They also believe that Columbus forced Christianity on the Natives and that Natives didn’t need Christianity and they were fine with their tribal religions and traditions. Those who think Columbus is a hero believe that he found land that was unknown to Europeans, he introduced new technology to the Natives, and that Columbus brought Christianity with him and that the United States was built on Christian tradition. Therefore, Christopher Columbus brought over tenets that strongly influenced the United States.

7 Financially After In Columbus Final years got his money from the Spanish king that was guaranteed by the contract he signed. By the end of the fourth voyage to the Americas he held his end of The deal and told the king to give him his money.

8 Final Years As Christopher Columbus’ life went on, he became extremely religious. At the age of 55, Christopher Columbus died in Spain. His death was the result of Reiter’s Syndrome.
