When hot, liquid magma cools and solidifies becoming lava.

5 Composition & Texture of Igneous Rocks
Mafic rocks= light-colored and less dense Examples: Basalt & Gabbro Felsic rocks= dark-colored and more dense Examples: Granite & Rhyolite

6 Composition and Texture of Igneous Rocks
Coarse-grained= Feels rough (large crystals are formed) Fine-grained= Feels smooth (small crystals are formed)

7 Types of Igneous Rocks Intrusive igneous rock= Rock formed below the Earth’s surface Extrusive igneous rock= Rock formed at or near the Earth’s surface

8 Content Objective Be able to describe the process that forms igneous rocks. Be able to explain the difference between intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks and the texture of each.
