Circulatory System Life Science Book November 2012
2
Circulatory System Main function is transportation
Moves food & oxygen throughout the body Body needs oxygen, when combined with food we eat, creates an energy our body can use (respiration) Moves carbon dioxide and waste to parts of the body to excrete. This is a waste product of the respiration process What is the process opposite of respiration?
3
The “heart” of the system
Your heart is in control of your circulatory system. All blood travels from your heart to your lungs and back to your heart.
4
When you breathe in, you breathe ________ into your lungs.
The blood the travels from your ________ to your _________ and gets oxygenated. Once blood is oxygenated it travels back to the _______ and gets pumped to the rest of the body. After it is pumped to the rest of the body and oxygen is used, it then picks up the waste product _______ _________. It goes back to the heart and gets pumped back to the _________, to be exhaled and re-oxygenated.
5
Misconceptions Blood is NEVER blue
Once your blood is oxygenated it turns bright red. When it contains carbon dioxide and looses oxygen it turns dark red, but NEVER blue.
6
Blood 4 main components Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets
Plasma
7
Red Blood Cells Most numerous in entire body
Hemoglobin- part of red blood cells that gets oxygen from the lungs and also carries the waste _______ _________ back to the lungs. Made in bone marrow which is in bones (so… circulatory is also related to the skeletal system) Only live about 120 days
8
White Blood Cells White blood cells are twice the size of red blood cells Lifespan can be hours, days, months, or even years. Also made in the bone marrow Part of body’s defense system.
9
Platelets Last 10 days Platelets help stop your bleeding when you get cut.
10
Plasma You have 4-6 liters of blood in your body.
55% of your blood is made up of plasma (yellowish) 92% water and is quickly replaced Plasma contains nutrients, enzymes, and waste materials that need transported into or out of the body.
