1 Matter Because it matters

2 Matter Is anything that has MASS and VOLUME!

3 Mass The quantity of matter that a substance or object contains

4 VOlume Is the space taken up by a substance or object

5 Solid Has definite: Shape Volume

6 Liquid Has definite: Volume -But no definite shape!

7 Gas Gas has its volume and its shape determined by its container!

8 Chemical change Can occur in matter when substances combine to form new substances

9 physical change Can occur in matter when there is a change in appearance, but NO new substances form

10

11 Particle model of matter
All matter is made up of very small particles. There are empty spaces between the particles. The particles that make up matter are always moving. The particles are attracted to one another.

12 Kinetic molecular theory
Kinetic Energy is the Energy of…. MOTION All particles are always moving, so they always have kinetic energy.

13 Kinetic molecular theory
All matter is made up of very small particles. There are empty spaces between the particles. Particles are constantly moving. Particles are attracted to each other. Energy makes the particles move.

14 Thermal changes -matter expands when its temperature increases
Thermal Expansion Thermal Contraction -matter expands when its temperature increases -matter contracts (gets smaller) when its temperature decreases

15 Heat vs. Temperature TEMPERATURE HEAT -is the energy transferred from one material to another -the average kinetic energy of its particles

16 Changes of State Solid Liquid Gas

17

18 definitions Melting Evaporation Condensation Solidification (freezing)
Sublimation Deposition

19 More definitions MELTING POINT BOILING POINT
-the point at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid -the melting point of water is 0°C -the melting point of gold is 1064°C -the point at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas -the boiling point of water is 100°C -the boiling point of gold is 2856°C

20 Describing matter You can describe it quantitatively: -solubility -conductivity -viscosity -density -melting and boiling points

21 Describing matter You can describe it qualitatively: -state -colour -malleability -ductility -crystallinity -magnetism

22 Pure substances -only 1 kind of matter!
Elements Compounds -a pure substance that can note be broken down into smaller simpler substances -Can you think of any elements? -pure substances that have two elements combined in a unique way. -Can you think of any compounds?
