I can explain and describe the three states of matter.
2
Solid Have a definite shape and volume
Do not move fast enough to overcome attraction Close together and vibrate Two kinds: Crystalline- 3D, orderly arrangement, repeating pattern…diamond, ice, iron Amorphous- don’t have special arrangement…glass, wax, rubber
3
Liquids Change shape but not volume.
Particles slide past one another but are close together Move fast enough to overcome some attraction Unique characteristics: Surface Tension- force that acts on the particles at the surface of the liquid…gasoline, rain on a leaf Viscosity- liquids resistance to flow…honey, water
4
Gas Changes both shape and volume
Particles move quickly to overcome almost all of the attraction Move freely/independently Particles break away from one another

3 States of Matter Closure Quiz
The particles of a __________ are very far apart and move independently of one another. A liquid’s resistance to flow is called__________. The shape and volume of matter in the __________ state do not change. How are the particles in a crystalline solid arranged?
