3
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
MATTER Anything that has mass and takes up space.
4
SUBSTANCE Element: Compound:
Made up of elements and/ or compounds. Element: (Open text to page 8 ) - Individual atoms are all alike. Compound: - When 2 or more atoms are chemically combined together.

6
Substances can exist in different phases.
Solid phase Liquid phase Gas phase
7
A phase of matter that has a definite shape and volume.
SOLID A phase of matter that has a definite shape and volume.
8
Most solids have atoms that are arranged in a regular and orderly way.
Some solids have atoms arranged in an irregular pattern. These are called amorphous solids.
9
A phase of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.
LIQUID A phase of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.
10
Do all liquids has the same “liquidy” property?
Some liquids have a different viscosity. Viscosity is the resistance a liquid has to flowing.
11
A phase of matter that has no definite shape or volume.
GAS A phase of matter that has no definite shape or volume.
12
What were the atoms doing in all three phases of matter?
Were they moving?
13
Matter is made up of tiny particles that are in motion.
KINETIC THEORY OF MATTER Matter is made up of tiny particles that are in motion.
14
What causes the rate at which the particles move to change?
Energy determines how fast the particles move. the greater the motion. the greater the temperature The more energy The lower the energy the lower the temperature The slower the motion
15
There are three things that determine whether a substance is a solid liquid or a gas;
They are . . . Temperature, motion, and spacing of the particles
16
In which phase of matter are the particles moving the slowest
In which phase of matter are the particles moving the slowest? The fastest?
17
Thinking question What is Heat of Fusion? Discuss with table partner
18
Before a solid can change to a liquid, energy has to gained in the form of heat.
In the reverse, before a liquid can change to a solid, energy in the form of heat must be lost. This heat is called the Heat of Fusion
19
Thinking question What is Heat of Vaporization?
20
Before a liquid can change to a gas, energy has to gained in the form of heat.
In the reverse, before a gas can change to a liquid, energy in the form of heat must be lost. This heat is called the Heat of Vaporization
