2 CLoSE READING Use when reading informational texts- students can become investigators of the text. Close reading is reading using annotation to make connections, predict, ask questions and find purpose in what they are reading Should not be busy work, should have purpose and be enjoyable Comprehension- annotating Good strategy for informational texts- informational texts are very prevalent in national assessments.

3 Science NOTEBOOKS Connects prior knowledge to new material
Input and output side Output side is left side, diagrams/pictures and reflections Input on right side, notes, lab activities, and questions Students can add personal way to remember what they are learning Having science notebook, always in the same way can create an engagement in science and critical ways of thinking. Parents, teachers and students can view their progress and way of thinking

4 Discussion/Dialogue/Presenting
Problem Based Learning (PBL)/ Inquiry Based Learning- students have freedom to learn what they want and are interested in Teachers are still able to guide and ask questions to monitor students’ understandings Discussions can be based around texts Activates prior knowledge Requires reasoning and explanation - elaboration Speaking in small groups and as a whole class- fishbowl, think/pair/share Practicing communication skills

5 Science Vocabulary Go BEYOND definition
Don’t copy down the word and definition Super important to say the word out loud and use it in context Using vocabulary games Word Walls Context clues Using models Construct own definitions root/base words Make sure students understand the words not just MEMORIZE them!

6 Argumentation Justifying Agreeing and disagreeing Dialogue
Respectful criticism Discussions / debates Listening Using and finding evidence to support ideas Defending/supporting arguments Evaluating own argument
