Quadrilaterals What does “quad” mean?
2
Parallel vs. Perpendicular
Never crosses Intersects to form a _____ angle
3
What do you know about quadrilaterals?
4
You will need to draw this on your scratch piece of paper…
!. Draw a straight, horizontal line segment. 2. Draw a line that is parallel to your original line segment. 3. Draw a line that crosses the first and second segments (this line will connect your first and second line segments). 4. Draw another line that crosses your first and second line but not your third line (you will be connecting the first and second lines on the other side).
5
Does everyone’s shape look the same? Why or why not?
6
All of our quadrilaterals have 4 sides and at least 1 pair of parallel sides. When a shape has one or more sets of parallel sides it is called a TRAPEZOID (some shapes might also be a more familiar shape, such as a square or rectangle)
7
On a scratch piece of paper….
1. Draw a straight, horizontal line segment. 2. Draw a line segment that is parallel to the first line segment. 3. Draw a third segment that crosses both. 4. Draw a fourth line segment that crosses the first two line segments and is parallel to the third line segment.
8
If a quadrilateral has TWO PAIRS of parallel lines, it is called a PARALLELOGRAM.
9
On a scratch piece of paper…
1. Draw a straight, horizontal line segment. 2. Draw a line segment parallel to the first line segment. 3. Draw a line segment that is perpendicular to both line segments. 4. Draw another line segment that is perpendicular to both line segments.
10
A quadrilateral with two sets of parallel lines AND four right angles is called a RECTANGLE.
11
On your scratch piece of paper…
1. Draw a straight, horizontal line segment that is exactly 4 squares long. 2. Draw a line segment that starts from the end of your line segment and goes exactly 4 squares down. 3. On the other end of your original line segment draw a line segment that goes exactly 4 squares down. Connect your second and third lines.
12
A square is a special rectangle whose sides are all the same lengths.
13
Quadrilateral- has 4 sides
Trapezoid- 1 pair of parallel sides Parallelogram- 2 pairs of parallel sides Rectangle- 2 pairs of parallel sides, 4 right angles Square
