1 Teen Success Ideas to Move Your Mind by Beatrice J. Elye
Slide Show of Significant Excerpts for School Success Compiled and arranged by Carolyn Harrell Chapter 19 pages The Landscape of Courage

2 Resilience over Rocky Terrain
Each day takes courage Life inevitably will contain moments of fear and treacherous paths…

3 Courage is not limited to occasional feats of dramatic and deliberate public risks such as saving lives.

4 Courage can be simpler and quieter; internal in nature.
Standing up for what you believe in if it goes against public opinion Admit mistakes and trying again Learning something new after being comfortable with the old way It’s stepping out into the unknown, often alone, believing you can weather the consequences.

5 But knowing what courage is does not automatically make one courageous just as reading about chocolate is not the same thing as tasting it. Every part of daily existence has some opportunity to be brave, take chances, and extend yourself. If you want to lead a courageous life, look within yourself and examine your personal beliefs. Act in a courageous way, and know how to handle your fears. Write a brief account of the most courageous act that you have ever witnessed or heard or read about. How did it make you feel?

6 Summary Courage is essential to thoughtful daily living.
Collective acts of courage have made civilization possible—even for the cowardly. The habit of courage can be internally programmed. Summary

Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character. -Margaret Chase Smith If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream. -Martin Luther King, Jr. Courage without conscience is a wild beast. -Robert G. Ingersoll It is curious—curious that physical courage should be so common in the world, and moral courage so rare. -Mark Twain
