Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions
We can add or subtract rational expressions by combining like terms if we have the same denominator. The challenge will be to find a common denominator!
2
Adding or subtracting rational expressions with a common Denominator
π π + π
π = π+π
π π₯ 4 + 5π₯ 4 = 6π₯ 4 6π₯ 4 = 3π₯ 2
3
Another example π₯ 3 π¦ 2 β π₯+1 3 π¦ 2 = ? β 1 3 π¦ 2
4
Finding the Least common denominator
Step 1: factor each denominator completely Step 2: The LCD is the product of all unique factors, each raised to a power equal to the greatest number of times that the factor appears in any factored denominator.
5
An example (I do) find the lcd
7 20 π 2 π 3 & 9 15π π 4 ππ ? 60 π 2 π 4
6
An example (I do) find the lcd
π₯+4 π₯ 2 β36 & π₯ π₯ 2 +12π₯+36 = ? π₯β6 π₯+6 2
7
We doβfind the LCD 2 3 π₯ 5 π¦ 2 & 3π§ 5π₯ π¦ 3 = 15 π₯ 5 π¦ 3
8
Another (we do) find the LCD
πβ1 π 2 β25 & 2π 2 π 2 β9πβ5 = ? (π+5)(πβ5)(2π+1)
