1 Solving Equations Involving Fractions

2 Solving Equations with Fractions
Which # could you multiply πŸ‘ πŸ• to get the product 3? 7 x πŸ‘ πŸ• = 3 Which # could you multiply πŸ“ πŸ” to get the product 5? 6 x πŸ“ πŸ” = 5

3 𝒏 πŸ’ = 5 n = 20 HOW??? Like this... Watch... Solve like before!! (4)
The easiest way to solve a fraction equation is to first get rid of the fraction !!! Example 1 - Solve for n HOW??? (4) 𝒏 πŸ’ = 5 n = 20 Multiply each term by the denominator!! (4) Like this... This will cancel the denominator, leaving just numerator!! Watch... Solve like before!!

4 Solve As Normal Ex. 2 – Solve for x
Multiply each term by the common denominator!! Cancel out terms and Multiply the rest Solve As Normal

5 Ex. 3 – Solve for m First, multiply each term by the common denominator!! This will cancel the denominator, leaving just numerators!! m has a denominator of one, so just multiply 8 times m. Now solve!! ... and reduce!!

6 Now solve!! Practice - Solve for y
Hint: First, multiply each term by the common denominator!! Now solve!!

7 Practice 2 - Solve for x The problem looks different again but still follow the same steps. First, multiply each term by the common denominator!! What is it? NOW, divide 3 into 12. This will cancel the 3. This will give you 4. Now multiply 4(-2). Now solve!!

8 Practice 3 - Solve for x – Next Level
First, multiply each term by the common denominator!! What is it? 3 will go into 6, 2 times. (2)(-2) = -4 (2) (3) (3) (6) (6) - 2 3 π‘₯ βˆ’ 1 2 = 1 2 (6) 2 will go into 6, 3 times. (3)(-1) = -3 -4x -3 = 3 2 will go into 6, 3 times. (3)(1) = 3 = +3 -4x = 6 Now solve!! x = x = x =

9 Alex can drive 200 km in the one day.
Word Problems: Alex rents a car for one day. The charge is $18 plus $0.12 per kilometers. Alex wants to spend exactly $42. How many kilometers can he drive? Let m equal how many km. m = 42 0.12 m = 24 m = 200 Alex can drive 200 km in the one day. Step 1: Underline any key information Step 2: Write a let statement. What does our variable represent? Step 3: Write an equation: Step 4: Solve the equation: Step 5: Re-read the question. Does your answer make sense? Ex. 2 Katie wants to buy a bicycle that costs $129. This is $24 more than 3 times what she saved last month. How much did she save last month? Let s equal how much she saved last month = s 105 = 3s 35 = s Katie saved $35 last month.

10 Dan and his 3 friends share profits from a garage sale
Dan and his 3 friends share profits from a garage sale. After the garage sale, Dan’s mom gave him $15. Dan now has $75. Write an equation for the problem to help determine the profits from garage sale and solve. π‘₯ = 75
