Important documents and people that lead to the Constitution

2 Magna Carta Written in 1215 Limited the powers of King John and no longer allowed him 100% control It became the supreme law of the land No one was above the law People got individual rights Parliament was formed (laws were agreed upon by the King and Parliament)

5 Petition of Rights Signed in 1628
Charles I called into a session of Parliament to agree to this document Limited his power (could not collect taxes w/o the consent of Parliament)

7 John Locke Wrote Two Treatises of Government in 1689
He talked about two important ideas: Natural Rights-When a person is born, God endows them with certain natural rights The Social Contract-The main purpose of government is to protect individual rights Specifically the right to life, liberty and own property

9 Life, Liberty, Property Life: The right to defend yourself against physical attack and against an unjust government that imprisons you Liberty: The right to free speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, the right to a fair trial etc. Property: The right to own property and have it safeguarded by government

King could not suspend the laws of Parliament, levy taxes or maintain an army King was subject to all laws passed by Parliament King must swear to uphold the Constitution Impact on U.S. Constitution: President cannot suspend the laws of Congress, is subject to all laws passed by Congress and must swear to uphold the Constitution

Certain rights were guaranteed to every man The government is forbidden from interfering with these rights (cruel & unusual punishment/excessive fines & bail/fair & speedy trial by jury of peers) Impact on U.S. Constitution: Our Bill of Rights guarantees certain basic rights to each individual. The government is forbidden from interfering with these rights.
