Once the scene has been secured, a lead investigator will start processing the crime scene area.

FIRST RULE Cardinal Rule
Guard evidence against damage, contamination or loss and document everything Cardinal Rule “Eyes open, mouth closed, hands in pockets!”

In many cases there may be more than one crime scene!
Primary Crime Scene: -where the crime occurred ex. the bank, the murder site etc. This may not be available to the police and may never be found. -usually gives more information if it can be found Secondary crime scene: Related to the crime but not where it occurred. This could be where a body was dumped or where a car was found that was used in the crime.

Processing the crime scene
Forensic science begins at the crime scene Crime lab runs on physical evidence Physical evidence -any and all objects that can establish that a crime has been committed or can provide a link between a crime and its victim or a crime and its perpetrator

SECURE AND ISOLATE The first officer on the scene needs to protect the area and rope or barricade it off Detain the person who reported the crime. They may be a witness or a suspect. They need to ensure that the perpetrator is not present and arrest them if they are Keep witness separate to avoid collusion

Preserve and protect Lead investigator will determine the size of the crime scene. This should include The spot the offense took place Entrance, exits or escapes Location of key evidence, i.e. body, safe, weapons

Documenting and Processing
Detailed notes need to be taken by sketch, photo, video and audiotape. Photos are taken BEFORE ANYTHING CAN BE MOVED! To determine size a ruler can be used or anything of known size Sketch gives the dimension, distance, content and relationship between items
