1 Korean War Quick Facts 1950 –1953
Began when North Korea invaded South Korea. UN Security Council passed a resolution authorizing force to preserve the independence of South Korea. North Korea and China v. South Korea and United Nations (mostly US) President Truman called it a police action. Congress never declared war Ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

2 Korean War Casualties Estimated 1.2 million people killed (mostly Koreans and Chinese) Over 33,000 Americans killed.

1.2 million deaths (low estimate) Successful implementation of the Truman Doctrine Preservation of South Korea as a free nation Resignation of President Truman Election of Dwight Eisenhower, first Republican president since Hoover Legitimization of the UN Economic boom in Japan (The Korean War was Japan’s Marshall Plan) Made America’s hostile relationship with China even worse.
