The depth of field is a measure of how much of the scene is in sharp focus
Small aperture (f:22) = large depth of field Large aperture (f2.8) = small depth of field

Depth of field depends on…
The focal length of the lens How close the object is to the camera The aperture, or f:stop, being used

Telephoto lenses have a smaller depth of field than wide-angle lenses

The depth of field gets smaller when the subject is close to the camera.

Some lenses are marked with a depth of field scale
What will be in focus at f:16? What will be in focus at f:8? This 90mm lens is focused on 8 metres. At f:32, everything between 4m and infinity will be in focus.

This 35mm lens is focused on 1.6 metres. At f:22, everything between 0.8m and infinity will be in focus. What will be in focus at f:16? What will be in focus at f:8?
