Paul Dunbar uses metaphors to compare himself to a caged bird, which symbolizes lacking freedom. For example, the first stanza describes a beautiful sunny day with “faint perfume” in the air; however, the bird is stuck in a cage. The second stanza conveys the pain the bird is in because it consistently beats against the cage. The last stanza reveals how the bird prays and begs to be free one day. In summary, the caged bird represents Dunbar’s lack of freedom as a Black man in America during the early 1900s.
