Scientific Investigation
2
The Scientific Method The scientific method is a set of steps scientists can use to find answers to questions. Five major steps of the scientific method: Observation Hypothesis Experiment Data Analysis Conclusion
3
Observation Observations are descriptions of objects or events using the five senses Example: The mixture is powdery and white.
4
Hypothesis A hypothesis is an explanation of an observation that can be tested. Example: The mixture is probably baking soda and citric acid.
5
Experiment An experiment is a test to check if a hypothesis is correct. Example: -Water is added to a mixture of baking soda and citric acid -An equal amount of water is added to an equal amount of mystery mixture
6
Data Analysis Data is a record of notes collected during an experiment. Data is often organized in charts or graphs so results can be compared. Analysis means looking closely at results of data. Example: The mixture reacted to water in the same way as baking soda and citric acid.
7
Conclusion A conclusion is an explanation of the results of an investigation. Example: It is possible the mixture is baking soda and citric acid.
8
Variables of Investigation
Variables are anything that can change the result of an experiment. It is important to keep variables controlled so that the experiment is a fair test. Example: Measure equal amounts of water, mixture, baking soda, and citric acid.
