Different Forms of Government
Written in terms of cows
2
Absolute Monarch Government is controlled by a King or Queen. They held all the power in the nation’s government and were able to rule by force. ***The King or Queen inherit this power through family blood OR through divine right. You have two cows. Your lord takes some of the milk.
3
Totalitarian Government (a.k.a. Dictatorship)
One person or a small group of people holds all the power. The government has total control over the lives of the people. It rules the nation by force (and usually fear). ***Take power by force. You have two cows. The government takes both and shoots you.
4
Democracy Democracy is Greek for “rule of the people”. Government are ruled by the people directly or by elected officials.
5
Direct Democracy All the voters in a community meet together to make the laws and decide what actions to take in any situation. You have two cows. Your neighbors decide who gets the milk.
6
Representative Democracy (a.k.a. Republic)
The people elect representatives to carry out the work of the government. The elected officials make laws and decisions for the people. *This is the American form of Democracy.* You have two cows. Your neighbors pick someone to tell you who gets the milk.
7
Fascism Much like a dictatorship, one person or a small group holds total power. Fascist governments usually force a complete mobilization of a single ideal – everyone working for the betterment of the community. You have two cows. The government takes both, hires you to take care of them, and sells you the milk.
8
Communism and Socialism
The government owns all property and everything produced is distributed equally among the people. The difference between the two is the intensity in which they are forced. Socialism is usually a stepping stone to communism. You have two cows. Your neighbors help you take care of them, and you all share the milk. (Communism) You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. You have to take care of all the cows. The government gives you as much milk as you need. (Socialism)
9
Militarism The government is controlled by the military. All laws and decisions are the work of the military leaders. You have two cows. The government takes both and drafts you.
