Why Cities? Factories need workers Cheap living Convenient
Unskilled workers Cheap living Convenient Near work For immigrants especially, this was important because they could form communities with people who shared their culture

MAJOR PROBELMS As Cities grew…. Government had to figure out ways to deal with services and living conditions Housing Tenement= Small Living quarters- 2-3 families in a one family apt. Limited or NO windows Crime No police force until to small to have impact on crime Sanitation Sewage and manure on the streets No trash collection No clean water- no indoor plumbing Fire Little to no water Wooden houses with candles for light No firefighters- only volunteer
